Congressman Gerry Connolly will once again serve as the Ranking Member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s Government Operations Subcommittee, which has expanded jurisdiction in the 114th Congress.

Full Committee Ranking Member Elijah Cummings announced Connolly’s selection by his peers on Tuesday at the first meeting of the Committee in the 114th Congress.  Connolly also served as the Government Operation Subcommittee’s Ranking Member in the 113th Congress.  The ranking member is the senior Democrat of a committee or subcommittee in the Republican-controlled House.

"I'm honored to be named Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and hope to work in a bipartisan fashion with Chairman Meadows to make sure the federal government is as efficient and effective as possible," Connolly said. "We have a great opportunity to work together on key national priorities, such as strengthening the federal workforce, modernizing the U.S. Postal Service, enhancing government contracting, and streamlining the government's use of technology."

The Government Operations Subcommittee, chaired by Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC), has broad jurisdiction and oversight of the Executive Office of the President, the Treasury Department, the Postal Service, the Office of Management and Budget, the Department of Labor and other federal agencies, the federal workforce, federal procurement, federal property, regulatory reform, the Paperwork Reduction Act, the Census Bureau, the District of Columbia, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), National Drug Policy, Unfunded Mandates, Grant Reform, federal and presidential records, government management and accounting, and ensuring that the actions of federal agencies are open and transparent to public view.

In announcing Connolly and the other Ranking Members of the Committee’s six subcommittees, Cummings said, “I welcome our new subcommittee Ranking Members, who bring strong leadership, expertise, and a diversity of perspective to the Committee. I am confident that these Members will strengthen our continued commitment to improving the lives of the American people, and I look forward to working with them to address the critical issues facing our nation and ensuring that the federal government works efficiently and effectively for everyone.”

Connolly was also selected to serve on the House Subcommittee on Information Technology.  Both of his subcommittees on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee deal with matters that directly impact Northern Virginia’s economy and workforce.
