Rep. Connolly to Unveil NoVA Civil Rights Archive at July 7 Ceremony

Connolly's year-long project documenting the struggles and triumphs of Northern Virginianswill be archived by the Library of Congress, George Mason University, and the Fairfax and Prince William Library Systems. Congressman Gerry Connolly’s year-long project to create the Northern Virginia Civil Rights Archive: Personal Histories of Struggle and Achievement in Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Actwill culminate with a dedication ceremony at George Mason University on July 7.

The event will take place on Monday, July 7, 2014 on the third floor in Grand Tier III of the George Mason University Center of the Performing Arts located at 4373 Mason Pond Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030. The program will begin at 10:00 AM. There will be free parking available in Lot K, located directly across the pond from the Concert Hall.

A press availability will be held at 11:15 am.  It will include Rep. Connolly, Northern Virginians who volunteered personal testimonials of their struggles and triumphs during the civil rights movement, and staff members from GMU and Connolly’s office who worked on the project.

More than 50 hours of recorded video interviews have been collected, as well as written testimonials and pictures that will be made available to the public through digital archives at the Library of Congress, George Mason University, the Fairfax County and Prince William County Library Systems, and Congressman Connolly’s official website. During this Dedication Ceremony, Connolly will turn over the submitted material to the various repositories to conduct the extensive archiving process.
