Congressman Gerry Connolly issued the following statement following President Obama's address on the NSA.
"The President took an important and necessary step today by outlining reforms for how the NSA handles the personal metadata of American citizens. We must strike the right balance between protecting our national security and preserving the civil liberties of those we serve. It has become clear that current NSA policies are not doing this, and I welcome the President’s commitment to work with Congress to review America’s intelligence gathering activities and provide more robust oversight.
“I support proposals now pending before Congress that should be part of this renewed discussion about shaping these national security activities moving forward including expanding Congressional oversight of surveillance activities to include the bicameral Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees, which would complement the President’s pledge to provide more transparency. I am pleased to hear the President suggest a public advocate be added to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, and I support legislation that would make the judges serving on that court subject to Presidential appointment and Senate approval."
