Congressman Gerry Connolly joined Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe, Virginia Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, Congressmen Jim Moran and Frank Wolf, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Jim Cheng representing Governor Bob McDonnell, state Senator George Barker, Delegate Vivian Watts, and Fairfax County Supervisor Jeff McKay at a December press conference to show unified, bipartisan support for locating the new FBI headquarters at the GSA site in Springfield, VA. “We're going to win this on the merits, not on politics,” Connolly said. “We had a number of sites under consideration in Virginia, but we put our parochial interests aside to support the best site for Northern Virginia and for our national security. The GSA site in Springfield meets the FBI’s mission-critical needs.” Connolly also cited the proximity of the FBI’s training facility in Quantico and other locations in Virginia housing federal anti-terrorism offices. “The FBI plays a key role in fighting terrorism,” he said. “Interaction with other agencies is critical.” Governor-elect McAuliffe cited the need to diversify Virginia’s economy and he said, The FBI headquarters means jobs.” Senator Warner cited the proximity of the site to transportation including Metrorail, VRE, buses, and I-95. Senator Kaine and Congressman Moran both cited the unity of Virginia officials behind the Springfield site.
