Connolly Files Comments Urging Medicaid Expansion in Virginia With State Medicaid Innovation and Reform Commission

Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA) today filed comments with the Virginia’s Medicaid Innovation and Reform Commission urging the Commonwealth to accept more than $9 billion in federal funding to expand Medicaid coverage to more than 245,000 uninsured Virginians who would qualify. In his comments to the state commission, Connolly made a strong case for Medicaid expansion. “Aside from the significant health benefits that would become available to tens of thousands of uninsured Virginians, there is a compelling business case for extending Medicaid coverage, including a significant reduction in uncompensated care and an increase in health care-related jobs,” he said. Uncompensated health care in Virginia currently costs Virginia state and local governments, families, businesses, and hospitals about $1.65 billion annually. Under the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid eligibility is being expanded to include individuals with annual incomes up to 133 percent of the federal poverty line. The federal government would cover 100 percent of the costs of covering the newly eligible Virginians through 2016 and then cover 90 percent of more of the costs thereafter. Connolly's comments can be found here.
