The Commonwealth of Virginia, its port, and some Hampton Roads law enforcement agencies will benefit from $17 million in federal homeland security grants under its fiscal year 2013 state and local grants program, Congressman Gerry Connolly said today. Virginia will also share in $51 million in urban areas security funding for the National Capital Region and benefit from $3.5 million awarded to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Agency (WMATA) for Metro security, Connolly said. The homeland security grants come on the heels of a $3.1 million DHS/FEMA Staffing for Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant awarded to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department to enhance firefighter and emergency medical staffing that Connolly announced on Monday. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency released the grant information Friday afternoon. The various grants are aimed at assisting the Commonwealth, local governments, and local agencies: plan, equip, train, and conduct actions to protect and recover from acts of terrorism and other catastrophic events; enhance security programs in high-threat, high-density urban areas; help plan emergency preparedness and provide disaster relief and emergency assistance in the wake of disasters of all types; beef up security at the Hampton Roads port and law enforcement agencies; and enhance security on Metrorail, Metro bus, and other WMATA transit services. The Commonwealth will receive $6.4 million for Homeland Security initiatives. In addition, another $51.8 million was awarded for urban area security in the National Capital Region. Virginia will also receive $7.6 million for emergency management for disasters, and the Virginia Port Authority and Hampton Roads police departments will share $3 million in port security funding, Connolly said. “It is vital that the Commonwealth of Virginia has the resources it needs to partner with the federal government to protect our citizens and our critical infrastructure, including our transit systems and our port,” Connolly said.
