Connolly Statement on Sequestration Deadline
Washington, DC,

Congressman Connolly issued the following statement after last night's sequestration deadline: It is a shame that once again House majority leadership in Congress could not find a way to put aside ideology and find a balanced approach to avoid the across-the-board cuts from sequestration. If these cuts are allowed to stay in place I fear they will have a devastating impact on Northern Virginia's economy, as well as our national economy, security, and future competitiveness. Since last August I have joined members of the National Capital delegation, including Frank Wolf and Jim Moran, as well as industry leaders and federal employee groups, in calling on Congress to find a balanced alternative to sequestration. I agree that we must take reasonable steps to address our debt. However, I cannot accept the House Republican philosophy that the only way to do this is through spending cuts. We cannot cut our way to prosperity. We must have a balanced approach that finds strategic cuts and savings while maintaining critical investments that ensure our competitiveness in a global world. Sequestration was put in place to force Congress to act, not to become law. I remain committed to shutting off the sequester and will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to bring up a balanced approach that will do this. More on sequestration:
