The House Subcommittee on Government Operations will hold a field hearing Tuesday afternoon at George Mason University to examine whether the federal government’s efforts to optimize new information technologies and consolidate data centers are actually saving taxpayers’ money.

The subcommittee is chaired by Congressman John Mica (R-FL).  Ranking Member of the Subcommittee is Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA).  Government Reform is a subcommittee of the House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee.
The hearing will coincide with the release of a report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reviewing progress made to date on the federal government’s Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative.  A senior representative of the independent government watchdog will testify at the hearing.  The data center consolidation initiative was established in 2010 with a goal of closing 40 percent of the 3,133 federal data centers and achieving $3 billion in cost savings by the end of 2015.
Witnesses include federal IT officials, the GAO’s IT management director, and senior representatives of Fairfax-based Amazon and CGI.
