Connolly Urges Residents to Prepare for Hazardous Weather
Washington, DC,
October 26, 2012
Virginia declares State of Emergency in advance of Hurricane Sandy. Connolly urges residents to prepare for hazardous weather. For more information click here.
I urge all Virginians to prepare for what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting will be a “historic” weather event as Hurricane Sandy makes its way up the East Coast and makes landfall in the Mid-Atlantic region over the next few days. Based on our experience with prior storms of this magnitude, Northern Virginia residents should exercise every precaution in preparing themselves and their homes. One of the hallmarks of this community has been the willingness of neighbors to pitch in and to help one another in times of crisis like this. It is that kind of readiness that will help us weather any storm. Please be safe. The National Weather Service has issued a “Hazardous Weather Outlook” for the Commonwealth, and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell declared a State of Emergency Friday in advance of the storm. The most significant impact for Northern Virginia will be felt from Monday afternoon into Tuesday. Hurricane-force winds of speeds of 35 – 55 mph with gusts of up to 70 mph and flooding as a result of 4’’ – 8’’ of rain are anticipated across much of the region. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is urging all Americans in East Coast states to take steps now to prepare their families and businesses for hurricanes and severe weather. Personal preparedness is critical and it is never too early for individuals and families to take action. One of the most important steps individuals in impacted areas can take is to follow the guidance provided by local authorities. I urge all residents to utilize the following resources to remain informed and take preparedness actions for themselves, their families and their neighbors. Rest assured that federal, state and local governments will be coordinating emergency responses and clean up, and my office will be providing up-to-the-minute information as it is available through this web site and our social media accounts.
