The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission has been awarded a $1 million federal transportation grant to design and build a new bus maintenance facility on the western end of Prince William County.
PRTC officials announced the grant, secured by Rep. Gerald Connolly as part of the fiscal 2010 federal transportation appropriation, in a news release Wednesday.
The grant will be used to design and construct a new bus maintenance facility on 15.18 acres at the Patriot Business Center industrial park, in the area of Prince William Parkway and Balls Ford Road, according to the release.
Currently, all PRTC’s bus maintenance is done at the PRTC Transit Center in Woodbridge.
“The second facility is essential to sustain and expand PRTC’s bus operations, since the existing facility was designed to house only 100 buses and PRTC is already operating 140,” PRTC Executive Director Al Harf said.
PRTC’s board of commissioners has authorized acquisition of the site, currently owned by FRP LCC of Manassas, for the facility and PRTC is in the process of getting the permits needed to build the site there, PRTC spokeswoman Christine Rodrigo said.
PRTC officials expect the sale of the site to close early next year. The first phase of the facility is slated to be completed in 2016.
With the addition of the $1 million federal grant, PRTC has secured $6.88 million in funding for the facility. PRTC officials do not yet have an estimated total cost for the project and won’t until design work is under way in 2013.
