 March 2, 2012 - PotomacLocal.com  Neighbors and politicians took time out of their schedules to visit with students on this 15th annual Read Across America Day. Congressman Gerry Connolly, D-Fairfax, Prince William, read Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham” to students at McAuliffe Elementary School in Dale City on Friday morning. “The kids are quick to correct me if I get something wrong. It’s a lot of pressure, but it’s worth it if it gets students more interested in reading,” said Connolly. Read Across America Day is celebrated each year on Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. An avid reader, Connolly says he reads about two books per week. “Reading is critically important to a child’s education,” said Connolly. “Growing up I loved to read. I try my best to bring that same passion and enthusiasm for reading to today’s students.” At nearby Marumsco Hills Elementary School, Prince William Woodbridge District Supervisor Frank Principi also read to students there. In Stafford County, students from Brooke Point High School traveled to area elementary schools and performed a rendition of Dr. Seuss’ “ I wish I had Duck Feet” – a story about a he had different animal body parts. Brooke Point’s “Learn and Serve” students also promoted the virtues of gratitude along with literacy, said Stafford County Public Schools spokeswoman Valerie Cottongim. Dr. Seuss, a cartoonist known most notably for his childrens books, would have turned 108-years-old today.
