(photo courtesy FedTechMagazine.com) Congressman Gerry Connolly was honored as a leading voice and advocate for the advancement of information technology within the federal government by the Association for Federal Information Resources Management (AFFIRM). Connolly received the organization’s 2012 Leadership in Service to the Government IT Community Award. AFFIRM is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to improving the management of information and related systems and resources within the federal government. Connolly is the Ranking Member of the House Government and Reform Subcommittee on Technology, Information Policy, Government Relations, and Procurement Reform. During his two terms in Congress and his years as Chairman and member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Connolly has been a strong advocate of Northern Virginia’s technology community and its important role in the federal government’s IT operations. In presenting the leadership award to Congressman Connolly, AFFIRM said: “Congressman Connolly has done much to champion both federal employees and technology contractors. He introduced legislation to create the Federal Acquisition Institute to support professional training of federal employees needed for management of increasingly complex federal acquisitions. He has sponsored and cosponsored major FISMA and cyber security legislation and a founding member of the Congressional Cyber Caucus. He coordinated House and Senate support of a GAO study of laws and regulations impeding Federal agency and departmental transition to cloud computing technologies, to include remedial actions Congress might take to remove such impediments. He co-chairs the Smart Contracting Caucus where he advocates improved communication and collaboration between Federal agencies and businesses selling to the government. He authored with Senator Sarbanes and Congressman Wolf the Telework Enhancement and currently is overseeing agency implementation of the congressionally passed and newly enacted law. He was a primary author of the Federal Cost Reduction Act to facilitate implementation of the Federal CIO's data center consolidation initiative. Last, the Congressman has an open door policy with respect to technology and government contracting firms in the Washington metropolitan area, not exclusively in his Northern Virginian district. He listens and understands the concerns of our industry. He has been responsive, open and effective in addressing technology issues in government and technology contracting issues.” The AFFIRM Awards Selection Committee included representatives of a number of federal agencies and IT companies.
